Question by nyyankeesrule02: Did Maya Angelou have any big significance during the Civil Rights movement?
I’m doing a project where I’m discussing three different voices during the Civil Rights Movement. I chose Martin Luther King Jr., Malcolm X, and Maya Angelou. I felt confident with my choices, but now I’m worried because I’ve been doing research, and I’m not sure if Maya Angelou really had such an influence to the Civil Rights movement at all. Did she?
I need to know ASAP. Thank you.

Her name has never come up in any CR stuff I’ve ever heard about. She’s relatively new to the scene. I was introduced to her through literature classes.
According to the Wikipedia article, she knew Martin Luther King, Jr, and did a little work with Civil Rights, but then moved to Ghana. So I wouldn’t count her as a big name for the Civil Rights Movement. Certainly not on the scale of MLK Jr and Malcolm X.
Take a look at this site for others. I’d definitely include a female in your trio, just not Ms Angelou.
