Question by : Who is a really good poet besides Shel Silverstein?
I’m writing my Christmas list and I want a book of poems. I like Shel Silverstein, but I’m 13 and want to find another poet. I also love Edgar Allen Poe.

That’s a very big question. What I would suggest is a good poetry anthology, containing the works of many great poets from the dawn of the English language up until our present day. Then, look through to see who you prefer–though I’ve no doubt you can learn much from all of them.

That is a book that I guarantee shall remain ever on your bookshelf.

I agree with the ealier answer in that an anthology gives you a broad perspective of many works and can be an indicator of a particular poets’ style. There’s little to be gained from spending money on a poet whose works don’t strike a chord with you.

Notwithstanding that you could do a lot worse than hunting down work by Roger McGough. If you like Silverstein then I am sure you will find much of Roger’s work entertaining.

For War poetry it is hard to beat Wilfred Owen and Sassoon. Robert Frost is accessible also.

Instead of reading people’s opinions on poets that you might like, go to the library or a bookstore and pick up some books and start reading. There is so much variety out there, skim a few and see what you like.
